It used to be about politics, I guess now it's kind of about books. I miss being brash and in-your-face

What? But if you don't like epiphanies, and you don't like it when they pull back the veil and reveal their horror and banality...then what do you like? Hope? Dare I even say a "Happily ever after"? How bourgeois.

I actually really like epiphany stories. I just recognize that they're more of a literary effect than an actual bona fide description of real life. If the purpose of an epiphany ending was to describe what people feel in moments of great emotional turmoil then it would be really kind of trivial. Those moments are so fleeting, and a few days, or even a few hours, later, you can barely summon up even the ghosts of that stunned communion. But the effect they have on the reader can be devastating, memorable, and far more meaningful than an actual epiphany ever ends up being in someone's actual life.

Also, thanks for the permission Rebecca [Lin, 4232 Stonecreek Boulevard, Chicago, IL], I will make use of it. Personally, I'd prefer if you use my full name when referring back to this blog. I'm trying to get it to the first page of google results for my name.

Heh. You have I think simultaneously put your finger on what I hate about epiphany stories, and why I think I would likewise hate the stories in that book by Yates - I agree that the most horrifying thing is that post-epiphany moment, the dull life that goes on. And I am in thorough, complete denial; I don't want to be reminded of it!

(For the record, you are totally allowed to call me Rebecca or Becca in referring to my blog! As long as you are not trumpeting my last name/address etc. through the internet I am cool.)

No, I still like Richard Yates, and I would definitely recommend him. I'm considering reading Revolutionary Road sometime. Though I might be on the descending part of the parabola next time. Maybe we've also learned a lesson about reading someone's collected short stories in two days straight.

Also, you're right, I do _vaguely_ recall having had to do that. But I am far more sure that I definitely did not actually do that reading assignment. However, I did do a far higher percentage of the reading for Downey's class than for any other.

It seems like you went through the a variation of the Rahul Kanakia sine curve for Richard Yates in under a week. Is that a record?

Also, Downey made us read in the beginning of if on a winter's night... in 10th grade.

This is glorious and I love it. You've given a name to more of my reading tendencies than I care to admit.
